Although there have been reports of pickpocketing, Bocas del Toro is generally pretty safe. There are some strong currents to watch out for. This is especially true of Wizard Beach, where several swimmers have drowned.
Beginner surfers should make sure not to get out of their league. The island has some world-class waves and many are not meant for amateurs. Be sure to wear booties if you're surfing over any reefs – the edges are sharp and the warm Caribbean Sea means there's a good chance of infection.
