La Casbah - Restaurant Bocas del Toro - Panama

Open from 6 until 10pm, Tuesday to Saturday, this small yet inviting bar and restaurant in north Bocas offers both tasty and generous mains of fish, shrimp, steak, chicken and pork – all served up with inventive choices of sauce (fish of the day with coconut and cucumber was especially delicious), rice or potatoes, and delicately dressed salad ($8.50-12). Tapas-style appetizers and lighter dishes such as falafel, bruschetta, and goat cheese salad ($5-6) are also available, and vegetarians fare well with a selection of pastas and dishes like vegetables au gratin. Desserts such as bananas or pineapple flambéed in rum add an appealing and authentic local Caribbean flavour to the otherwise self-proclaimed Mediterranean cuisine.

Diners can sit outside on the attractively lit porch area, or inside, where you can still look out onto the action on the street. La Casbah always seems fairly busy and reservations are welcomed if you want to secure a table. Service keeps up with the pace and the place generally has a friendly intimate feel, with unintrusive music playing in the background.
