Set on one of the main inhabited islands a five-minute boat ride from El Porvenir, this popular place has rooms in a purpose-built house or cabins with sandy floors by the beach. It is not the idyllic island paradise, as there are about eight tightly-packed cabins in a line facing side-on to the beach, but it is a nice, good value base from which to walk around the island and explore the local community and the way the Kuna Yala people live.

Nulunega Island. $35p/p includes three meals and boat trips. Fly from Panama City to El Porvenir ($73round trip).
