Da House Hotel is easy to miss. Camouflaged among other comparable colonial buildings, Da House’s main entrance is located along Callejón de la Capilla – a small alleyway off San Francisco Street in Old San Juan. Despite it being nondescript from the outside, once you make it up the flight of stairs into the main lobby, you’ll find a surprisingly vibrant hideaway with high ceilings and unique artwork.

Most rooms are equipped for two people (double beds) although some can accommodate an extra person. There is internet available through Ethernet cable in the rooms and a computer with internet in the main lobby in case you don’t want to lug the laptop along. The rooftop patio with hot tub is a great place to enjoy a sunny Caribbean afternoon and (perhaps best of all) the bilingual staff is plugged into local events and can help you organize trips to the tiny Puerto Rican islands of Culebra and Vieques.

There are no TVs in the rooms and aside from paying guests, other visitors are generally not permitted due to the expensive art lining the walls. The bathrooms are tiny and there is no elevator in this four-story building. It is also important to note that Da House sits above the Nuyorican Café which has live music a few nights a week. But considering the convenient location, comfort and cleanliness, $80-$120 a room it is well worth it.
