Across from Plaza Colón in Old San Juan you’ll find Café Puerto Rico – possibly the best restaurant in the area to go to for satisfying food.
Café Puerto Rico is one of the least expensive restaurants in Old San Juan (although not cheap by any standards), and offers a relaxed atmosphere with a welcoming staff, who have been known to spontaneously burst into song now and then.
Besides its bar with numerous cocktails, Café Puerto Rico offers a large menu which includes a host of delectable Caribbean dishes – chicharrones de pollo (crispy chicken chunks), arroz con bacalao (yellow rice with codfish) and mariscos (seafood) among others – all served in large portions.
Even with two levels, the café’s current space can barely contain the crowds. If you get there during times of heavier tourist traffic, be prepared to wait. With any luck, Café Puerto Rico will eventually expand into a space as big as its reputation.
