The Boathouse Hostel claims to be “ your home away from home,” and it lives up to its claim. Two Prague natives have run the riverside hostel for nearly 17 years. A wall of letters thanking them personally for their hospitality testifies to what makes this establishment so appealing. Hearty portions of home-cooked Czech food served nightly in the common room (priced at around 7 USD) give guests the chance to exchange travel stories and recommendations. Sprawling breakfasts of yogurt, ham, muesli and Czech bread are free of charge every morning, as is the hostel’s “welcome gift”packet of postcards and a pen.

The Boathouse’s one downside is its location—a 10-minute walk and 15-minute tram ride from the city center. Although, in such a comfortable, inviting atmosphere, visitors may be tempted to sit outside on the hostel’s wooden deck and talk with fellow travelers, instead of braving the crowds at the Charles Bridge or the city’s famous Old Town Square.
