The most ancient and most visited photo gallery in Europe is housed in a former water tower right by the Garonne river. The brick tower was built in 1823 to supply the city’s fountains and the cogs and pipes of the hydraulic system can still be observed through glass panes in the floor. The building was converted into a gallery in 1974 by Jean Dieuzaide, a famous local photographer, and now holds exhibits, sometimes of contemporary international artists, sometimes retrospectives of famous photographers, or else showcases of local up-and-coming talents. There is a small shop selling specialized photography magazines and a library with over 10,000 specialized books.
