When the Irish are off to their local watering hole, they call it "Down the Pub." On such occasions you’ll be sure to find workmates, old friends, families, neighbors and even herds of kids gossiping or telling tales from the treasure chest of famous Irish myths.
Spending a few hours a day ”down the pub” is an Irish tradition and an effective way to relax after a day of labor.
The quality and atmosphere of each pub varies depending on the clientele it serves, as well as the area where it's located, but every pub can be warm and welcoming once you walk in the door. There is usually live music, a roaring fireplace and many cheerful voices filling the room -- all of which make it a great introduction to the friendly and often tipsy Irish social life.
All though the Irish pub culture involves much more than the alcohol itself, you’ll definitely not be judged by having a pint or five too many.
Over-indulgence of alcohol is a problem in Ireland; it ranks among the highest alcohol consuming countries in the world. However, despite the rich local beer and whiskey, the unforgettable atmosphere is what will make you remember Irish pubs for a long time to come.
Sharing pints of dark brew with local heroes, while they brag about their day’s accomplishments, is worth much more than the sum of its sips. And even if you can’t come up with any other excuse… at least it doesn’t rain in the pub!
As your Irish friends might say, sláinte!
