Lisbon Zoological Garden

Lisbon, Portugal

Museum, City Park

The Lisbon Zoological Garden is a modest zoo on well-kept grounds slightly outside of the downtown area. The zoo is home to many traditional favorites like lions, giraffes, elephants and bears, but the Koala Bears probably steal the show. There is a large pool where trained dolphins and sea lions perform at set hours daily. The best feature of this zoo is a gondola-thing which circles over all of the exhibits, allowing a birds-eye view of all the animals lounging around. The zoo in currently undergoing a major renovation and the animals are getting new, modern enclosures in place of their old concrete pens, some of which look to be unmodified since the zoo first opened on this site in 1905. Some of the animals (such as the bears) are still in the older pens, which are quite depressing; hopefully they’ll get new digs soon.

There are better zoos

Rating: 75%

This shouldn't be on top of your things to do in Lisboa list unless you're a real fan of zoos, really bored, or have little kids. Maybe it'll be better when and if they fix up the animal enclosures.
