Shopping in Óbidos

If you’re shopping, be sure to try a complementary sip of Óbidos’ famous, locally made cherry wine. It’s very good, and vendors will often either give you a sip or sell you a shot in a small chocolate shotglass. Down the wine and then munch the glass! It’s quite tasty. Naturally, bottles of the elixir (as well as the chocolate shotglasses) are for sale.

As an important stop on the tourist circuit, Óbidos is packed with gift shops offering souvenirs of varying quality. The porcelain and tiles are, of course, very good, and you can find some locally made dolls and other treasures. The prices for ceramics are, in general, a little lower than in Lisbon. The sheer volume of gift shops – there seem to be about three of them for every full-time resident of the city – ensures competition and therefore reasonable prices.
