The Castle Inn of Obidos is an unforgettable experience: it is the only one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal where you can actually spend the night. Although the impressive walls encircle the entire city, there is a castle at one end, once used by local lords. This castle has been converted into a first-class hotel and restaurant.

There are very few rooms at the Pousada, so be sure to book ahead of time, especially in the summertime when more tourists come to visit. The rooms in the Pousada are a bit small, a natural side effect of converting the castle from a fortress to a hotel. The rooms make up in charm what they lack in size.

The restaurant is very good but also small, so if you want to eat there, be sure to make a reservation, even if you’re staying there. You don’t have to be lodged at the Pousada to eat there.

Even if you can’t afford to stay there, it is well worth it to come in and take a look around. If you can talk your way into the castle, the high walls and towers are lots of fun to explore.
