Museum
Opened in 1990, the Reina Sofia is one of the world’s top modern art museums. Built on the former site of Madrid’s hospital, begun in the 16th century, the Reina Sofia art museum pretty much picks up where the Prado leaves off. The museum, as its name implies, is devoted entirely to modern art, which includes anything created from the end of the nineteenth century to the present. When it was inaugurated, it took many of its works from the now-defunct Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art and the Prado’s modern collection, which included the famous painting Guernica by Picasso.
Today, the museum is home to almost 17,000 individual works of art. Modern art is not limited to paintings and sculptures, and there are many photographs, videos, and even architecture. Only about 2% of the total collection can be put on display at any given time.
Although the Museum has works by many international artists, it is their collection of Spanish works that stand out. Picasso is, of course, prominently featured, as are Miró, Dalí, Juan Gris and more. The museum covers several floors and you could easily spend a whole day there: plan on at least a couple of hours.
