Up The Río Paraná

For centuries the Río Paraná was the main highway from Buenos Aires to Misiones and the Gran Chaco. During the Spanish colonial era, some were settled, like the major port Corrientes. Other cities, such as Rosario, just sprouted out of the landscape to handle the export of cattle. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this river was the route of European immigrants who arrived directly to their new homes in the northern territories of Gran Chaco and Misiones.

The Río Paraná forms the border between the northeast provinces, with Santa Fe and Chaco on the west bank, and Entre Ríos and Corrientes on the eastern. Further north, it defines Argentina from Paraguay. Feeding the great waterway are the Paraguay and Iguazú Rivers. Within the Paraná watershed are the Esteros del Iberá, a marshland full of birds, yacaré caimans and the world’s largest rodent, the capybara. Northeast Argentina is also home to another of South America’s wetlands, Bañado La Estrella in Formosa Province. Río Pilcomayo and Chaco are just two of the national parks also worth visiting.
