Up The Río Uruguay

The Río Uruguay marks the border between Argentina and its neighbors Uruguay and Brazil. This river’s banks are draped with tawny-sand beaches, great for swimming and fishing. Year-round the region enjoys a temperate climate. During January and February, Gualeguaychú, Colón and other towns groove with competing Carnaval comparsas (drum groups) and dance troupes. All up and down the river are fine national parks, like El Palmar near Colón, and 10 hot spring complexes (both salt and fresh water). Yapeyú, birthplace of South American Liberator José de San Martín, is the gateway to the Jesuit-Guaraní ruins of Corrientes and Misiones Provinces. No wonder it is a popular weekend get-away for residents of Buenos Aires looking for respite from the capital city’s hectic atmosphere.
