Topiary Garden - Other Activity Tulcán - Ecuador

Tulcán’s sole worthwhile attraction is the lovely topiary garden in the cemetery at the far end of town. The cypress hedges which line its paths have been clipped into hundreds of carved arches, rotund birds, chubby monkeys and squat pre-Columbian figures. With any luck, while taking a stroll around the quiet garden, you will come across the head gardener shearing away, and he will happily point out the most recent creations. The first bushes were made into esculturas en verde (green sculptures) in 1936 by Don José María Franco Guerrero, who based his creations on ceramics involving pre-Columbian and Egyptian motifs. His son keeps the legacy alive, which has inspired some neighboring villages - like El Angel - to clip the trees of their squares as well.
