Valle De Majes

As the road heads north from Arequipa to Cotahuasi Canyon, it passes through the The Valles de Majes (Majes Valley). The Río Majes is born is with the meeting of the Colca and Andamayo rivers, which tumble from Yanasalle volcano (4,886 m / 15,929 ft) to the Pacific Ocean at Camaná, traversing 465 kilometers (284 miles). For the first 80 kilometers (50 miles), the valley is no more than six kilometers (3.6 miles) wide. It then widens, to a broad, green expanse, hemmed by worn hills, with vineyards and orchards covering the landscape. This is Arequipa Department’s prime wine and pisco producing region. The valley celebrates its Festival de Vendimia (Grape Harvest Festival) between February and April.

The Majes Valley has a mild climate, spectacular scenery, archaeological treasures, dinosaur prints in Querulpa and El Castillo, a wind-sculpted mountain. These attractions draw day-tripping tourists from Arequipa. The Majes River is one of the region’s most popular for rafting, with Class II-IV rapids. Agencies in Arequipa and family farms in the Majes Valley, like Majes River Lodge, offer whitewater adventures on the river. The valley is also full of reminiscences of the Wari, Collagua and other nations that lived here in ancient times. The most famous site is Toro Muerto Petroglyphs, near the village of Corire. Agencies in Arequipa offer full-day tours to the Valle de Majes, which include a visit to a pisco bodega.
