Central Jungle

While Peru's central jungle is light on famous sights, its thousands of miles of rain forest, varied activities and, most importantly, ease of access, have made it an increasingly popular alternative to the Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado areas.

Tingo Maria, Chanchamayo and Oxapampa all sit on what is called the ceja de la selva or the Eyebrow of the Jungle. This region, where the Andes descend into the rainforest, is known for its diversity of species and its spectacular landscapes, especially its waterfalls.

The only major city in the region is Pucallpa, which is also about as deep you can get into the jungle by road. The city serves as a major port and gateway to Iquitos, but it also has become a bona fide destination of its own, luring a mostly backpacker crowd to the oxbow lake of Yarinacocha.
