Much more than maple syrup, snow and Celine Dion, Canada has long been overshadowed by its neighbor to the south. Relatively safe and largely misunderstood, Canada remains uncharted territory for most despite the many accommodation options for varied budgets. With its countless festivals, activities and attractions, Canada’s reputation as a worthwhile travel destination is long overdue. As the second largest country in the world, Canada’s four major regions encompass ten provinces and three territories, spanning a diverse landscape. With its urban centers and vast wilderness, frigid winters and scorching summers, Canada is a land of extremes with something for everyone.

Whether you’re looking to take part in adventure travel or searching for a quiet, romantic getaway, Canada has a number of viable options. Visitors may head to Alberta or British Columbia to experience a variety of tours and recreational activities offered among the breathtaking Rocky Mountains, or check out the spectacular views on a train ride through Ontario’s Agawa Canyon. For stargazers, there is the Toronto International Film Festival and the Montreal International Jazz Festival which attract notable celebrities annually, and sports enthusiasts will find a variety of Canadian teams to suit all tastes. Go skiing during a white Christmas in Whistler, or feel the pulsating rhythms of Caribana during the summer.

Reputed to be some of the most polite people you’ll find anywhere, Canadians come from varying backgrounds. Canada’s ethnically diverse population is most noticeable in the larger cities, such as Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Visitors to the Great White North will find authentic international cuisine from countless cultures, and have the chance to experience various cultural celebrations.

Officially a bilingual nation, English is most widely spoken and French is mainly concentrated in the province of Quebec, although there are pockets of Francophone communities elsewhere. While Canada has enjoyed a political stability unseen in many countries around the world, Quebec separatism continues to be a point of debate. Other social issues which continue to be discussed in public and private arenas are Canada’s relationship with its Indigenous communities (referred to as First Nations in Canada) as well as civil rights for same-sex couples.

Places not to miss on your trip to Canada:

Niagara Falls –These renowned falls have attracted families and lovers for generations. If you’re bringing the kids during the summer, spend some time at Marineland – an aquatic theme park with fun activities for everyone.

CN Tower – Visit Canada’s national tower located in downtown Toronto. Face your fear of heights and check out the view from above by stepping onto the tower’s glass floor. If you’re not up to the challenge, the CN Tower offers many other activities, such as an arcade and motion picture ride.

Vancouver Island – One of the most popular tourist destinations on Canada’s west coast, Vancouver Island is a paradise for the eco-travel enthusiast. From marshes, to beaches, to mountains, this island has it all.
