Restaurant
If Vincent Van Gogh or Frida Kahlo lived in modern-day Los Angeles, Café de Artistes, tucked away in a 1930s Arts and Crafts bungalow, would most certainly be their regular haunt. Large prints of the artists’ self portraits hang on the candlelit back patio amid trellises and flowerboxes flush with greenery. In these painters’ stead, Hollywood’s media artists—actors, musicians, and industry types—flock to the outdoor banquettes for some of chef/owner Jean Pierre Bosc’s unfussy French California cuisine. Inside, melon walls and a wood burning fireplace set the mood for romantic interludes. While there is overlap with sister restaurant Mimosa’s bistro fare, with favorites like moules frites and macaroni and cheese, the menu draws on a wider Mediterranean repertoire including grilled merguez sausages and mushroom raviolis. Featuring a late-night menu 11 p.m.-2 a.m. Thursday-Saturday—when DJs spin tunes on the front porch-turned-lounge—the café captures a bohemian sensibility with Hollywood panache.
