By Juliette Acker

Miami may be known for its Cuban food, but after visiting Tap Tap, you’ll question why its Haitian food isn’t as well known. "Tap tap" is Creole slang for Haiti’s answer to public transportation - often-crowded buses, decorated and painted on every inch. Tap Tap, the restaurant, keeps the spirit of the tap tap buses intact, there are brightly painted murals all over the restaurant, some filled with imagery from the Vodun religion. And the menu is crowded with flavor. Haitian cuisine shares some roots with West Indian food so you’ll find favorites such as goat stew and plantains on the menu, but you’ll also find distinctive Haitian dishes such as pumpkin soup, spinach in coconut milk or fish with lime sauce. Be sure to order their version of a mojito made with Haitian rum. Tap Tap provides a reasonable dinner out with entrees ranging in price from $10-19. On the weekends, be sure to call ahead and settle in for the house band, which plays Haitian music from Thursday to Saturday starting at 8 pm. Tip: Tuesday through Friday, Tap Tap has a Happy Hour from 5-7 pm with half price cocktails.
