New York is funny in that you can select the type of service you are interested in before selecting a restaurant. If you are in the mood for an experience similar to the feeling of George Orwell's 1984, pick Republic. Everyone is equally ignored and rushed through this socialistic dining experience. The décor at Republic is sleek and modern. Diners are seated at mess-hall style benches in a high-ceilinged cafeteria. If Ikea's designer had a scary Thai cousin, this is how he might have envisoned dining. The food is good, affordable, and portions are generous. $6 to $9 noodle bowls are the name of the game here. Expect liveliness at Republic, not romantic, candlelit tables. It's difficult to hold a conversation here with all the noise, but yelling is part of the atmosphere.
