Famous Resident Of Recoleta: Jorge Luis Borges

Biography, writer, Recoleta

While it may be Colombia’s Gabriel García Márquez who is the most internationally renowned magical realism author from South America, it was Argentina’s Jorge Luis Borges who many highlight as having been the first to write in this style three decades earlier, in the 1930s.

A resident of Avenida Quintana in Recoleta, Borges wrote short stories, essays and poems, and is credited by some as having invented the hypertext style of novel writing, through which the same story can be read in different ways. His most famous books are Ficciones (1944) and The Aleph (1949), both of which are collections of short stories interconnected by common themes of dreams, labyrinths, religion and more.

In 1955, by this time becoming blind and no longer able to write, Jorge Luis Borges was appointed both professor of literature at the University of Buenos Aires and director of the Biblioteca Nacional in Recoleta. He was awarded the first International Publishers’ Prize in 1961, giving him worldwide acclaim. He died in 1986.

During his life, Borges created controversy in Argentina as a well-known opponent to Peronism. Yet it is a credit to the quality and importance of his work that he remained well-regarded as a writer in the country, both throughout his life and beyond.
