gay, lesbian, Buenos Aires

Take one red-hot, late-night city, add some of South America’s most beautiful people of every sexual persuasion, throw in stylish gay bars, clubs, boutique hotels and spas, finish with a very un-catholic helping of no-strings-attached adventure, and you’ve cooked up a hearty portion of Gay Buenos Aires.

Gay Bars and Clubs

The scene here is far from underground, with this cosmopolitan capital expertly fusing sexy European chic with some hot Latin passion. Whether you just want to appreciate the eye candy or cruise for your own personal Don Juan (or Juanita) check out the well-known clubs like the infamous Amerika (Tel: 11-4865-4416, URL: www.ameri-k.com.ar), which has throbbing electronic music, three dance floors, four bars, live shows and an even livelier darkroom; or Rheo, a new gay club night at Crobar on Fridays (Tel: 11-4778-1500, URL: www.rheo.com.ar) where the chic and the stylish go to see and be seen. On Fridays and Saturdays, cute and boisterous boys and girls–some of whom look too young to be out without mama’s permission–fill Teatro Roxy for Fiesta Plop and Ambar La Fox (www.theroxybsas.com.ar), where the young gay and lesbian crowd, cheap drinks and a hidden playroom make for a frisky combination. As with all the straight joints in town, don’t bother turning up before 1 a.m. or you’ll be the only one at the bar.

Gay-Friendly Cafés and Restaurants

If you’re hoping to start your cruising over a midday cappuccino, Buenos Aires is definitely not short on all-day hotspots. Visit Pride Café (Balcarce 869) in San Telmo for great coffee and snacks, plus outdoor tables for optimal people-watching. Alternatively, check out the gay-friendly Gout Café (Juncal 2124) in Recoleta, where you can enjoy the French-style surroundings while feasting on fantastic pastries and crepes.

Whether you’ve found your tall dark stranger or hot Latina arm candy, or you’ve come to B.A. with someone special, then there are plenty of great restaurants to choose from for a sexy dinner date. In Palermo, Rave (Gorriti 5092, Tel: 11-4833-7832) offers top-class international cuisine and a romantic atmosphere, while over in Congreso, Inside Restobar (Bartolomé Mitre 1571, Tel: 11-4372-5439, URL: www.restaurantinside.com.ar) has affordable local, French and Italian dishes, and a fun all-male strip show every night.

Gay-Friendly Hotels

As for a place to lay your head, the only choice worth considering if you’re looking for VIP luxury is Axel Hotel in San Telmo (Venezuela 649, Tel: 11-4136-9393, E-mail: buenosaires@axelhotels.com, URL: www.axelhotels.com) which has a popular pool party on Sunday evenings in summer. For something a little more cozy and casual, you might be more comfortable in one of the city’s gay B&Bs. For men only, Lugar Gay (Defensa 1120, Tel: 11-4300-4747, E-mail: reservas@lugargay.com.ar, URL: www.lugargay.com.ar) has a welcoming staff, tango classes, a Jacuzzi and video salon, and a policy of "no restrictions on the use of undergarments as attire"! Bayres B&B (Córdoba 5842, Tel: 11-4772-3877, E-mail: bayres@fibertel.com.ar, URL: www.bayresbnb.com), a fun option for gay, lesbian, and bisexual travelers, is a little on the shabby side, but has plenty of common spaces and is great for meeting fellow travelers.

If you arrive on the first or second Saturday of November, don’t miss the annual pride parade (www.marchadelorgullo.org.ar) to really get a glimpse of the city’s colorful sexuality in all its glory.
