Methods of Calling Home from Argentina

  1. Skype or other Internet Based Calling—Skype, the internet based phone service provider, mostly dominates this market. Skype allows users to call other Skype users via the internet, landline or cell phone. Calling other Skype members over the internet is free and easy, as long as you have a head set and a fast internet connection. Calling a landline will cost you a reasonable amount and cell phones cost a bit more. Some competitors are entering the market and if you want to check out their services, Yahoo, the well-financed startup Jajah, and the big Web site Lycos have all released no-cost or low-cost VoIP P2P solutions.

  2. Phone Cards—Buying a phone card and using it on either a pay phone, hotel/hostel phone, cell phone or the popular locutorios is another option for calling home. Phone cards are very cheap, though the price is higher if you are calling a cell phone. You can also use your phone card with a cell phone, though that may change the rates as well. Check the phone card you purchase for its particular rates and specifications. You can purchase phone cards at kiosks and convenience stores.

  3. Buying a cell phone in Argentina—Cell phone companies include CitiMovil, Personal and Movistar. Your cell phone will have an Argentinian number and SIM card. Buy a rechargable plan which enables you to pay money as you need it instead of having an expensive plan. You can recharge your minutes at many kiosks and stores around Argentina, with the highest concentration of kiosks and stores being in Buenas Aires. Buying a phone card along with your Argentinian cell phone will allow you to save some money on calls.

  4. Buying a SIM card in Argentina—If you have a GSM enabled, unlocked cell phone, you can buy an Argentinian SIM card when you get to Argentina. You can then buy a rechargable plan from a cell phone provider in Argentina and recharge it as necessary from local kiosks. Cell Phone providers include CitiMovil, Personal and Movistar. Either buying a cell phone in Argentina or buying a SIM card are more expenive, but also more convenient options.

If you have an unlocked, GSM enabled cell phone, you can bring your own cell phone and get a SIM card in Argentina. Make sure that your phone is compatable with the GSM frequency in Argentina, however. If your phone is from the US, most likely it will. If your phone is from Europe or Oceana, however, there's a chance it won't. If you have a quad-ban phone, it should support all of the GSM frequencies available and so work everywhere. Check with your sevice provider before you leave home.
