RENTING CARS IN ARGENTINA
Renting a car in Argentina is not cheap – rates start at $80 per day and they often charge a per mile driven fee aside – yet it can be a good choice of transportation if you are planning to visit several destinations within the country and even cross over to neighboring Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil. Driving age in Argentina is 18 years old and your foreign driver’s license will suffice for legal maters, however, you must be prepared for defensive driving and aggressive traffic.
DRIVING HINTS AND TIPS
Stay under the speed limit – 40-60 km/h in cities and 80 km/h in highways – and wear your seat belt at all times, even if you see other drivers disobey this law. If you are planning to drive out into the country, make sure to fill the tank before you leave urban areas, as gas stations are scarce in rural Argentina. Gas is referred as nafta in this country, gasoline everywhere else.
Also, be aware that most highways are privately owned, therefore you will have to pay tolls every so often to drive through them.
