As the second-largest country in South America after Brazil and the eighth-largest country in the world, Argentina stretches for about 3,650 km (2,268 mi) from the humid rainforests of the north to the icy glaciers of Tierra del Fuego. In between, this diverse country of 2,766,890 sq km (1,068,302 sq mi) is home to rugged mountain ranges, fertile plains, rolling grasslands, cosmopolitan cities, alpine lakes, hundreds of rivers and waterfalls, and miles of Atlantic coastline. The country is home to both the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere (Cerro Aconcagua, 22,835 ft / 6,960 m) and the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere (Laguna del Carbon, 344 ft. /105 m).
