Most visitors to La Plata depart from Buenos Aires, generally making their way south to Mar del Plata. The Ferrocarril General Roca connects these and other major cities, for which a multi-stop ticket could come in handy. Renting a car or going on a bus can make the trip from Buenos Aires pretty quick – an hour approximately – by taking the Ricardo Balbín Highway, also known as the Buenos Aires-La Plata highway. There are over 15 inter-city bus lines – omnibus – leaving and coming into La Plata on a daily basis.
Though the city has an airport and a port, these are not regularly used. Puerto de La Plata was a major investment for the city at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, however large portions of the upper basin of the river are too shallow for navigation.
