Even though La Plata is the provincial capital, the national capital stands too close for many services to extend to La Plata. It is best to handle things like travelers checks in Buenos Aires before heading to La Plata. Like in the rest of the country, public telephones work with calling cards, easily found in kiosks and telephone offices. There are also phone booths available 24/7. To make a call from Argentina to another country you must dial 00, then the country and city codes. Calls from other countries to Argentina must use the prefix 54, then the area code of the respective city – 221 for La Plata. Tariffs are reduced from 10pm until 8am.

The city of La Plata counts with 43 municipal sanitary units dispersed throughout town. There are always pharmacies opened where you can ask for direction on over the counter medications.

Dollars and Euros as generally accepted, however money exchange houses and banks will trade currencies. Credit cards of frequent acceptance are American Express, VISA, Diners and Master Card.
