Luján's premier attraction is not only the center of town but the reason for its existence. In the courtyard outside, visitors can light prayer candles on the massive cross that fell from one of the spires and see the steps it broke around back. High vaulted ceilings and a stark, beautifully constructed altar create an interior that's both humbling and welcoming; even the stray dogs on its floors cannot disturb the tranquility. Unlike most churches, in this one the state plays a huge role. Above the altar hangs fabric in the colors of the Argentine flag and a prayer banner asking Jesus to deliver an Argentine identity refers to politics still recent in the minds of many. Don't forget, of course, to visit La Virgencita at the back of the church. Tours of the crypt, displaying the original crown of the Virgin and other treasures, are available hourly for a minimum of eight people.
