Despite never being formally educated, the accomplishments of Victoria Ocampo made her a pioneering feminist and prolific cultural figure in Argentine history. She was the first woman to be issued a driver license and went on to be founder and financier of Sur, an important literary journal of the 1930’s that featured work by Borges, Cortazar and other many important Latin American writers. Her country estate is a beautiful example of the Mar del Plata architecture and has been converted into an exhibition center for contemporary art. A few of her personal affects are shown in the upstairs bathroom, but the house is more a monument to what she stood for than a shrine to her per say.
