Perched atop a hill, Tandil’s somewhat bizarre religious monument can be seen from around town, but it is only upon reaching it that one can truly realize the oddity. Based on the opinion that it looks like Calgary (the hill in the Middle East on which Jesus was crucified), the residents of Tandil have created their own South American version, with sculptures delineating the Catholic Church’s “stations of the cross” so that visitors can literally walk in the path of Jesus. The path culminates with Christ on a giant cross, at the base of which devoted pilgrims have left plaques of prayer. The more interesting moment, however, is on the descent, where a replica of the cave in which Christ was buried showcases a miniature of the man himself resting peacefully inside. It is a spiritual experience for the religious, but even those who aren’t religious are likely to enjoy Calvario for its uniqueness.
