Hospitals in Buenos Aires tend to be better than the ones outside the capital. The standard of equipment might not be as up-to date as you’re used to, but will be sufficient enough to deal with any emergency.

If you get hospitalized or require evacuation to your country of origin, this may turn out to be more painful for your wallet than your actual physical injury. Make sure you have your insurance in order, like traveler's insurance. 

Doctors

Public hospitals are more basic than the private ones, but the physicians are well-trained and often educated abroad. Foreign consulates can provide you with a list of English-speaking doctors in your area.

Treatment at private clinics may require on-the-spot payment, which usually ranges from $18-50.

In Argentina the doctors strive to fix the root your problem, rather than just the symptoms. The doctor-patient relationships tend to be excellent. Don’t be surprised if the doctor even gives you a kiss on the cheek when you leave.

Pharmacies

If you run out of medicine while in Argentina, or if you recognize your symptoms, you don’t necessarily need to make a doctor’s appointment. Most drugs that require a prescription in Western countries can be bought over the counter in Argentina. The majority of pharmacies have English speaking staff.

If you do see a doctor and prefer a special brand of medicine, this will have to be mentioned on the prescription.

Medicine tends to be pricey, but costs vary depending on if you have insurance. If you have insurance from home, you should check which rules apply to you.
