The neon signs of La Maroma are a beacon in the dark streets of the Abasto neighborhood. A classic and eternally busy bodegón, hams and garlic hang from the ceiling and guitarists make the rounds playing tableside tangos. The menu is endless and a bit confusing, and many people settle for grilled meat, but the real strength is the plates, most of which are big enough to be shared by two. Huge dishes like the milanesa maryland, which combines everything from fried banana to roasted red pepper, and the pollo a la portuguesa, are an evening in themselves. For those who don’t want to roll home, the smaller pasta dishes may suffice. La Maroma is a last stop for many coming out of the numerous independent theaters in Abasto and, although the decibel levels can get uncomfortably high, the people-watching is often entertaining.
