An underground circus may not rank high on Buenos Aires’ long list of must-sees, but intrepid travelers can still find excitement away from the crowds in the city’s burgeoning alternative circus scene. The Centro Kultural Trivenchi, in Barracas at Av. Caseros 1712, is just one of many institutions offering a variety of circus classes for kids and adults and once-weekly espectaculos featuring jugglers, clowns, acrobats, magicians, trapeze artists, contortionists, aerial silks performers and more. Be warned that a certain element of adventure precedes a show at Trivenchi: an inconspicuous door edged by graffiti opens into a large warehouse space, its broken walls plastered and painted in colorful abstract figures. Only in the back does one notice the series of wooden bleachers looking down onto the stage, backed by a large black curtain and framed by flowing red drapes. Similarly, the show is not for everyone: knowledge of Spanish is a must, while an appreciation for the weird is equally important. Many events are free, and beer and empanadas are sold at average prices.
