Shopping

By Brian Hagenbuch

The market in the Mataderos neighborhood on the southwestern edge of the city is the city’s largest and has more a county fair feel than that of a market. Founded in 1986, the city is celebrating its 20-year anniversary with a number of events recognizing its contributions to the preservation local culture and traditions. Hundreds of stands sell arts and crafts dominated by local silver and leather work, ubiquitous mate gourds, and other typical implements from the area, and the grounds play host to numerous festivals with folk music and dancing. Events are always accompanied with regional food and drink and the sprawling rural feel to the market is a nice break from downtown Buenos Aires where the old markets have been converted into shopping malls. Check the webpage for listings and keep an eye peeled for big name folk musicians who can often be seen for free at the market in fun setting.
