In a neighborhood where posh cafes and restaurants always seem to be either coming or going, Bar del Gallego is a true Palermo institution. This family-owned breakfast and lunch spot offers up a daily dose of no-nonsense comfort food at very reasonable prices – perfect for the hungry, budget-minded traveler. Menu items include typical parrilla dishes, sandwiches, pastas, salads, daily specials and deserts. For a great value, try the tallarines de espinaca con estofado (tagliatelle pasta made with spinach and topped with a healthy portion of tender roast) with the tasty recargo de pesto (side of pesto) for about $3.50 USD. The coffee here is also particularly good and about half the price of neighboring cafes. The lunch rush, between noon and 3:00 p.m., attracts a friendly, mixed crowd that makes it worth visiting during these hours.

80 year-old Emilio Sangil, who immigrated to Argentina to escape the economic hardships of his native Spain in the 1950s, opened Bar del Gallego in 1960 to cater to Palermo’s then-vibrant working class. As Palermo made the conversion from blue-collar to chic, a number of television, film and media companies set up shop in the area (which is why this corner of Palermo carries the "Hollywood” appellation), almost forcing Sangil to sell his location in order to make room for a proposed office complex in 1991. Luckily, Sangil held out against the US-owned Canal América 2 – and the considerable cash offers of up to $900,000 USD – explaining that he would rather tear down the building to construct a plaza for the neighborhood kids than sell his spot. Sangil and sons still run the restaurant six days a week.
