A respectful interaction between humans, animals and vegetation is the mission of one of the most innovative zoos in Latin America. Parque Temaikén, at 50km from the city, opened its doors on 2001 with four sections: Africa, Asia, endemic , and an aquarium. The animals living in Temaikén are hand-picked by the Temaikén Fund, and are mostly species in danger of extinction. Hippopotamus, antelopes, bats, tigers, flamencos and even squirrels live in environments made to closely resemble their own, where the constrictions seem invisible to visitors. The park is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10a.m. until 6p.m. (an extra hour during summer) and the box office opens an hour before the gates of the park.
