V!VA User‘s Description

Removed from the city center and overshadowed by the famous Cementerio de Recoleta, Chacarita's cemetery is often overlooked by tourists, but a quick trip on the "red" subway line (get off at Federico Lacroze) brings visitors to the cemetery's vast and hauntingly beautiful grounds. Created during the yellow fever outbreak in the 1870s to accommodate the growing numbers of dead, a train was built from the southern part of the city-today Parque Patricios-to what was then a rural area. Since, the cemetery has grown, and is now far larger than it's counterpart in Recoleta. It is more true to the economic realities of Buenos Aires; some parts are occupied by huge, ostentatious tombs, while much of the cemetery is divided into simple plots, often marked by little more than a wooden cross and flowers. Although most people make the pilgrimage to Evita's tomb in Recoleta, Juan Domingo Peron's remains are found in Chacarita, while tango enthusiasts can pay their respects to the legendary Juan Carlos Gardel.
