Ask any Argentine about Las Violetas, and chances are they will have a fond memory of coming here as a child. This truly is the perfect Argentine café, with the most delicious medialunas in all of Argentina (I am convinced), loose-leaf tea served in its own silver tea pot, numerous coffee beverages, and (in addition to a complete lunch menu) a special “tea time” option that includes tea/coffee, toast, a sandwich, cake and juice. It might sound “cute” but Las Violetas is more majestic than your average coffee shop. After walking into the large café, with its high ceilings, stained glass, Greek columns, and floor to ceiling glass windows (idyllic for people-watching), it’s quickly obvious why Las Violetas has had such a long and successful existence (it’s been open since 1884!).
Any café that can inspire a tango song (“La Esquina de Las Violetas” by Carlos Ceretti) is worth a visit, but between the exceptional service, the grand decor, and the perfect café/tea salon menu, Las Violetas is worth several.
