Polo - Horseback Riding Buenos Aires - Argentina

Polo has been around in Buenos Aires since British Settlers began to play on the Argentine Pampas in the late 1800s. Unlike its Asian origins, where everyone who had a horse played the game, in Argentina, polo has retained an air of exclusivity. The elite of Buenos Aires gather every spring for a season of chukkas that culminates in the Argentine Open, which takes place in early December.

The sport is played by two teams of four players, on a large grass field up to 300 yards long. Goals are scored by driving the small white ball through the opposing goalposts with a long-handled wooden mallet.

It's relatively easy to catch a game if you arrive in the city during the polo season (and a great excuse to get dressed up!). The place to be is the Campo Argentino de Polo de Palermo, at Avenida del Libertador 4300, where visiting dignitaries and royalty come to watch some of the world's most prestigious international games. Tickets are available from Ticketek (5237 7200), and you can find match information on the Argentine Polo Association website, www.aapolo.com.

And if you want to try your hand at the sport? Check into an estancia outside the city, many of which offer lessons as well as accommodation. If you're short on time or on a budget, half- and full-day options are available from polo clubs and companies like Feel Polo, with programs which offer hotel pick-up, the chance to watch professionals play a match, a great traditional barbeque, and the opportunity to get up on a polo pony and hit a few balls yourself. See www.feelpolo.com Prices start from $180 USD per person, and if you get bitten by the polo bug, private lessons are also available.
