Madres De Plaza De Mayo

During the 1976-1983 military dictatorship, thousands of young Argentines accused of being dissidents were illegally kidnapped, jailed, tortured, assassinated and disappeared. According to testimonies, some were thrown live from airplanes in ‚ÄúDeath Flights.‚ÄĚ Many pregnant women were kept alive until they gave birth; their children were given to families loyal to the military regime.

In 1977, mothers of the disappeared formed Madres de Plaza de Mayo. They marched silently, their heads covered with white diaper-scarves, silently calling on the government to bring the military junta to justice and to find their illegally adopted grandchildren. Despite assassinations and other threats, the Mothers continued. To this day, on every Thursday at 3:30 p.m., travelers join the Mothers on their silent, counter-clockwise march around the Plaza de Mayo.

Many Mothers say they were not politically aware until their children disappeared. Since then, many have taken up the children's mantle in trying to construct a New Society. The Madres de la Plaza de Mayo have a political-cultural center a block from the national Congress. The center has a bookstore-café, alternative university, radio station and other projects, and hosts events (Av Hipólito Irigoyen 1584. Tel: 4383-0377, URL: www.madres.org).
