Basilica De Santo Domingo - Historical Building Buenos Aires - Argentina

If the walls of this Dominican church could speak they'd have quite a story to tell. In 1806 the British took the church, withstanding heavy fire from outside, and later in the 19th century, the building was taken from the religious order and served as a natural history museum and an observatory. In 1955 the church played a role in the Revolución Libertadora and was held under siege and partially gutted by military fire. The church is also the resting place of General Manuel Belgrano, who was instrumental in securing freedom for the country, and created the design of the Argentine flag which still exists today. Check out his impressive granite tomb in the courtyard. Defensa 422, open daily 9-12:30 and 1:30 – 3 p.m.
