Catedral Metropolitana - Historical Building Buenos Aires - Argentina

Overlooking Plaza de Mayo is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, though it could be mistaken for a government building or law courts, with its heavy columns and no obvious religious symbols.

Wander inside and you'll find a dim, glowing sanctuary, calm in the face of the busy traffic outside. The tiled dome, golden alter and stained-glass windows surround the solemn resting place of national hero Jose de San Martín (in a mausoleum guarded by statues representing Argentina, Chile and Peru, the three nations freed by the General), while 18th Century paintings and sculptures from European artists can be found in the naves and chapels off the main latin cross. Open 10am-5pm Mon-Fri; 9am-8pm Sat-Sun.
