This collection of buildings southwest of Plaza de Mayo is the site of B.A.'s “intellectual beginnings.” In the early 1800s, Jesuit monks established the city's first school of medicine here, which later became the most important university in Buenos Aires, and the same “block of lights” is home to one of the oldest churches in town, Iglesia de San Ignacio, and the National College of Buenos Aires. Even more interesting is what's below: tour the centuries-old tunnels underneath the complex for a glimpse of the city's archaeological past. They go back to at least 1730 and have been carefully reconstructed. Historians still don't know if they were used for defense, escape, or smuggling.
