Fundación Proa is a testament to Argentina's devotion to the arts. Just around the corner from colorful Caminito, the Fundación Proa–named after the building’s triangular shape resembling the prow of a boat pointing out into the port of the Riachuelo–figures among the city’s top art galleries. Opened in 1996, the two-story Proa has since consistently attracted a mix of highly-regarded traveling exhibits as well as work by cutting edge local artists. Beyond the artwork on display, the old building is beautifully restored and has an attractive roof-top.
The space previously has hosted the works of American photographer Diego Rivera as well as married Mexican artists Andres Serrano and Frida Kahlo (the latter as part of a presentation of Mexican art), and in January 2009, a new exhibition of French Dadaist and Surrealist Marcel Duchamp cemented the arrival of Proa, Version 2.0. Included on the refurbished premises will be art shows in four exhibition rooms; an auditorium featuring Latin American films, art-video presentations and English is spoken in the main office, so non-Spanish speakers shouldn't have a problem communicating with the foundation by phone.
