A five-story building across a narrow street from the Riachuelo River, the Museo Quinquela, as it’s known in shorthand, contains works by various Argentine artists. The top floor is dedicated to Benito Quinquela Martìn, the painter who documented the daily life of La Boca at the beginning of the 20th century. Using large canvases and bright palates, Quinquela's stunning paintings are as vibrant and colorful as the neighborhood itself. Boat building, port laborers, ship graveyards, and fires, a constant threat to the wood-framed houses of La Boca, are the main themes of Quinquela's work. From the Quinquela exhibit, be sure to go out onto the rooftop terrace, where a less than spectacular sculpture garden is supplanted by spectacular views. With sweeping, 360 degree views over La Boca's port and low buildings, the rooftop provides a bird’s eye perspective of the brightly painted homes of Caminito. In the distance, La Boca's iconic football stadium La Bobonera can be seen, as can the picturesque bridges crossing the water to the city's southern suburbs. Part of the museum complex is the Teatro de la Ribera, a stopping point for quality plays presented by BA’s most respected state-run theater circuit.
