El Obrero

El Obrero, set deep in the industrial heart of the old Italian port neighborhood La Boca, serves up traditional Argentine fare in an historic atmosphere. For starters, try the mussels, marinated eggplant, or tortilla española, but leave room for the abundant main courses served on massive platters. Meat off the grill is the highlight, but the pastas, fish dishes, and puchero - a hearty stew perfect for a rainy porteño evening - are all good.

A little like eating in a museum, El Obrero's walls are a pastiche of old photos and boxing and football memorabilia paying homage to the rich past of the neighborhood.

In the loud and lively dining room, locals mix with tourists and the occasional illustrious guest- photos next to the entrance document visits from Wim Wenders and U2's Bono.

For safety, it's best to go in taxi and with company, and try to get there before 10 p.m. to avoid a long wait.

Traveler Reviews of El Obrero

El Obrero

Is local and different. Good atmosphere

Traveler from Argentina on Feb 06, 2009

1st Class Food and atmosphere

I have eaten at El Obrero 4 times now and think that it is great. The meat is excellent - particularly the Bife de Lomo and also the Chorizo sausages. The wine at mid-price range ( Malbec ) was very complimentary. The atmosphere is terrific - always of people enjoying the experience !! Thoroughly recommendable even if it is a bit "off the beaten track" and looks as though it is in the middle of a "war zone" Ian G. McCready
