Bi Won

Almost all the businesses in the commercial district of Once close their doors at night, but the small light in front Bi Won beckons. A delightful neighborhood Korean restaurant, the dining room, although windowless, is comfortably decorated and bathed in pleasant and airy Korean music. The restaurant follows the Korean custom of always serving food with alcohol, so starting with beer or wine prompts the arrival of a smiling waiter laden with numerous small dishes of delicious appetizers. Main courses are almost invariably large enough to split–an AR$10 plate fee is charged for splitting–and run heavily to soups and pastas which are indescribable and invariably tasty. Meat is cooked at the table and the servers couldn’t be friendlier.

When one thinks of the Buenos Aires culinary scene, pan-Asian cuisine is not necessarily one of the first things that comes to mind. But an increasing number of Eastern-themed restaurants, including Bi Won, a Congreso entry on the border of the Once and Abasto barrios that specializes in Korean dishes, is angling to change all that. Though the service is hit and miss, the entrees are massive (sharing, for a small per-person cover, is the way to go) and consistently satisfying. As you might expect from a place with no website and a cash-only policy, the ambience is fairly no-frills. So come here with great expectations of pampering your taste buds with authentic Korean cooking, not chewing on gorgeous scenery. Open Mondays to Saturdays, noon to 3 p.m., 7 p.m. to midnight.

Open: Monday-Saturday from 8 p.m.

Korean Food in BA

Yes, a good and better-than-average restaurant in South America that has quality Asian food is rare. So, eat here, but beware the area. Take a cab after 10, unless you're local and speak Spanish well. I would not hang around the area.
