This artisan fair started in the 1960s, evolving out of the hippie counterculture. Groups of artists and musicians who belonged to this movement used to gather in the Plaza, and eventually began selling artisan crafts.
The military regimes that controlled Argentina from the late 1960s kicked the hippies out of the Plaza, but the fair was resurrected after the fall of Argentina’s most brutal dictatorship in 1983.
The fair now enjoys official government recognition, and in fact all of the artists have to go through a screening process to ensure the quality of the products.
The fair, which has nearly a thousand stands, offers all sorts of arts, crafts, food and collectables, including handmade instruments, candles, photographs, shoes, clothes, jewelry, leather and antique books.
