The general consensus seems to be that this is the closest you will get to Japan in Buenos Aires. That's high praise indeed, considering the number of excellent Japanese restaurants popping up throughout the capital. But what else would you expect from a restaurant located in the building that houses the Japanese Association? Like so many of San Telmo's best treats, it doesn't look like much of anything from the outside, just another ancient, slightly rundown building. But the cliche don't judge a book by the cover may have been coined specifically with the barrio's dining scene in mind. Like most high-profile Japanese joints in Buenos Aires, Comedor Nikkai is notable among locals and in-the-know tourists for its sushi, but the menu also offers a wide assortment of noodles and tempura as well as meat, seafood and vegetable dishes. As added bonuses, credits cards are accepted, and you can count on--surprise!--friendly service with a smile. Open Mondays to Thursdays, noon to 3 p.m., 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., Fridays, noon to 3 p.m., 8 p.m. to midnight, Saturdays, 8 p.m. to midnight.
